On a Thursday afternoon, a couple of college guys are drinking beers out on the porch. It’s the end of the semester. Maybe they have finals to study for, but it’s definitely more important to hang out with your boys and soak up the late-afternoon sun. There’s a song playing out of their bluetooth speaker. That song is “Can’t Imagine Feeling Better.”
Featuring laid-back lyrics and airtight production, and reminiscent of Asher Roth in the best way possible, this groovy tune definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously, which works in its favor. “Today I got a skip in my step, but then I find I’m tripping on a banana.” This cartoonish bop is there to vibe to while you’re drinking a cold one, it’s not for picking apart or poring over. The track’s greatest flaw could be the lackluster chorus that feels more like pre-chorus than anything else, but a grander, more triumphant refrain might have killed the vibe. This song isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, it’s sitting right where it needs to.
Scoobert Doobert is a great producer. There’s a well-earned confidence and seasoned artistry to this track — the sounds of the drums, bass, guitar and various synths are expertly dialed in. There’s even a tiny bridge before the final chorus, introducing a darker, minor key flavor, building a perfect bit of tension before hitting us with the sweet release of the last blissed out chorus: “I can’t imagine feeling better than I do right now.” Hell yeah, Scoobert Doobert, keep doing you. Chill on.
